On Monday, February 20, 2023, the City offices and facilities in Killeen, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights, Enterprise, Michigan City, Williamsburg, Georgetown, York County, Spokane County, Grand Junction, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Wicomico County, D.C., Broward, and Staten Island will be closed in observance of Presidents Day. This includes all offices in the Municipal Building on Lafayette Street and Quarterpath Recreation Center, City Hall offices, the water office, transfer station, City of Enterprise offices, Aquatic Center, family resource centers, libraries, animal shelters, municipal buildings, and the Parks and Recreation Department Administrative Office.[0] Trash collection will be modified on this day with Monday’s garbage being picked up on Tuesday, Feb. 21, and Tuesday’s garbage being picked up on Wednesday, Feb. 22.[1] Additionally, parking is free in city garages, parking lots, and at on-street pay stations on Presidents Day.[2] From Monday, February 20 to February 26, the MOST will be open from 9:30 a.m.[3] This holiday is designated as ‘Washington’s Birthday’ in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code, and though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is the policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law.[4] Presidents Day was first established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, and then it became popularly known as Presidents’ Day.[5] It wasn’t until Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968 that the official celebration of Washington’s Birthday was designated as the third Monday in February (the law didn’t go into effect until 1971, however).[6] This holiday is meant to celebrate the first president of the United States, George Washington, and the presidents that followed him.[7] On this day, people around the world honor all presidents, both past and present.[8]
