Wall Street Rebounds on Nvidia Earnings Surge, Upbeat Economic Data

Today is a day of major news for investors, from corporate earnings to economic data to various acquisitions. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite all closed higher on Monday, as Wall Street looks to rebound from the worst week of the year.

Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) stock surged 14% today, boosted by its better-than-expected earnings results.[0] CEO Jensen Huang said in a press release that “AI is at an inflection point, setting up for broad adoption reaching into every industry, from start-ups to major enterprises.”[1] The company is launching new AI cloud services in partnership with leading cloud-infrastructure providers, including Microsoft, Alphabet, and Oracle.[2]

The Commerce Department’s durable goods orders for January plunged 4.5%, more than the expected 4.0% fall, following December’s 5.6% jump tied to aircraft orders.[3] Meanwhile, the National Association of Realtors’ pending home sales index jumped 8.1%, handily topping Wall Street’s expected 1% rise.[4]

On Monday, Tesla (TSLA) experienced a 5.3% increase in its stock market value, in anticipation of Wednesday’s Investor Day.[5] Shares of Li Auto Inc (LI) jumped +5% during pre-market trading following the release of the company’s outstanding Q4 results and optimistic Q1 outlook.[6] Union Pacific Corp (UNP) rose over 5% after it said it would replace its CEO Lance Fritz.[7]

On the economic calendar, the Institute for Supply Management’s (ISM) manufacturing survey index is scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m.[8] ET, followed by the ISM service-sector PMI on Friday.[4] High-profile retailers such as Target Corporation (TGT), Dollar Tree Inc (DLTR), Lowe’s Companies Inc (LOW), Macy’s Inc (M), Best Buy Co Inc (BBY), Nordstrom Inc (JWN), and Costco Wholesale Corp (COST) are set to report results this week.[6] At 11:30 a.m., the Treasury will hold an auction of 3-month and 6-month[9] [9] At 10:30 a.m., the Dallas Federal Reserve’s regional manufacturing business index for February will be released.[9] [9]

ADBE dropped by over three percent in pre-market trading after Bloomberg reported that the United States had taken action against the company.[10]
