Apple Celebrates 25 Years in India with Launch of First Retail Store and Plans for Local Production

Apple has opened its first retail store in India, located in Mumbai’s BKC district, with a second store opening in New Delhi on April 20.[0] The company’s commitment to the Indian market is strong, and the store launch marked 25 years of Apple in India.[1] The Mumbai store, named Apple BKC, is one of the most energy-efficient retail locations in the world, running on 100% renewable energy.[2] The store also features a handcrafted timber ceiling made up of over 450,000 individual timber elements. Apple’s move into India’s electronics market is part of a strategy to decrease its reliance on China for production and to boost sales and manufacturing of iPhones in India.[3] The company is partnering with Wistron, Foxconn, and Pegatron to manufacture its latest iPhone 14 models in India. Apple shipped about 6.5 million iPhones in India in 2022, compared to around 50 million each year in both the US and China.[4] However, India has the potential to scale up in the coming years.[2] Apple CEO Tim Cook attended the store’s opening and tweeted his excitement about the company’s first retail store in India.[5]
